05. Charles Owen
27 February 2021, 10:00pm - 11:00pm
Due to the current lockdown, we are unable to hold this concert in collaboration with Merton College Choir. We are instead delighted to be able to present this recital given by the exceptional pianist Charles Owen.
Charles Owen enjoys an extensive international career performing a wide-ranging repertoire to outstanding critical acclaim. He appears at many major UK venues such as Wigmore Hall, Bridgewater Hall, The Sage & Kings Place. Internationally, he has performed at the Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall in New York, the Brahms Saal in Vienna’s Musikverein, the Paris Musée d'Orsay, and the Moscow Conservatoire. He has previously appeared for Oxford Lieder with his piano duo partner Katya Apekisheva, including a spectacular performance in 2019 of Messiaen's Visions de l'Amen.
His programme for this special late-night recital includes two of Schubert's magical Impromptus, written around the same time as Winterreise and a perfect way to follow the performance of that work earlier this evening. He also performs Janáček's In the mists, the last of Janáček's major compositions for piano and an impressionistic masterpiece dating from 1912/13. Completing the programme is the magisterial 'Bénédiction de Dieu dans la solitude' by Franz Liszt, one of the central works of Liszt's 1847 cycle Harmonies poétiques et religieuses.
