21. A Young Man's Exhortation: Ben Johnson & Roger Vignoles

A star duo performs a recital of English song, including Michael Tippett’s ‘Cantata’ for tenor and piano, Boyhood’s End, written in 1943 for Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears. Gerald Finzi’s settings of Thomas Hardy in his cycle A Young Man’s Exhortation dwell on the passage of time and the twilight of life, summed up in its closing words: ‘And mourn not me, beneath the yellowing tree; for I shall mind not, slumbering peacefully’.
