Das goldne Kalb
German source: Heinrich Heine

Doppelflöten, Hörner, Geigen
Spielen auf zum Götzenreigen,
Und es tanzen Jakobs Töchter
Um das Goldne Kalb herum –
Brum – brum – brum –
Paukenschläge und Gelächter!

Hochgeschürzt bis zu den Lenden
Und sich fassend an den Händen,
Jungfraun edelster Geschlechter
Kreisen wie ein Wirbelwind
Um das Rind –
Paukenschläge und Gelächter!

Aaron selbst wird fortgezogen
Von des Tanzes Wahnsinnwogen,
Und er selbst, der Glaubenswächter,
Tanzt im Hohenpriesterrock,
Wie ein Bock –
Paukenschläge und Gelächter!

The golden calf
English translation © Richard Stokes

Double flutes, horns, violins
Strike up for the pagan dance,
And Jacob’s daughters
Dance around the Golden Calf –
Boom, boom, boom –
Drums beating, laughter pealing!

With skirts lifted to their loins
And clasping each other by the hand,
Virgins of most noble lineage
Reel like a whirlwind
Around the cow –
Drums beating, laughter pealing!

Aaron himself is borne along
By the dance’s crazy whirl,
And he himself, the faith’s defender,
Dances in the high priest’s cassock,
Like a buck –
Drums beating, laughter pealing!
