Raste Krieger
German source: Sir Walter Scott

Raste, Krieger! Krieg ist aus,
Schlaf den Schlaf, nichts wird dich wecken,
Träume nicht von wildem Strauss,
Nichts von Tag und Nacht voll Schrecken.

In der Insel Zauberhallen
Wird ein weicher Schlafgesang
Um das müde Haupt dir wallen
Zu der Zauberharfe Klang.

Feen mit unsichtbaren Händen
Werden auf dein Lager hin
Holde Schlummerblumen senden,
Die im Zauberlande blühn.

-

Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832)
_from The Lady of the Lake_

Warrior, rest
English translation © Richard Stokes

Warrior, rest, your war is over,
Sleep the sleep, nothing shall wake you,
Do not dream of fierce battles,
Of days and nights filled with terror.

In the isle’s enchanted halls,
A gentle lullaby
Shall caress your weary head
To the harp’s magic strains.

Fairies with invisible hands
Shall strew on your bed
Sweet flowers of slumber
That bloom in the magic land.
