Text & Translation

Syngur lóa
Icelandic source: Anon.

Syngur lóa í laufgum mó,
lipurt spói vellur,
gaggar tófa í klettakró,
krummahróið gellur.

Sumri hallar hausta fer,
heyrið snjallir ýtar,
hafa fjallahnjúkarnir,
húfur mjallahvítar.

The Golden Plover Sings – Summer’s Passing
English translation © Oddur Jónsson

The golden plover sings in the green meadow,
skilful the curlew sings,
The fox cries in the rocks,
the poor raven caws.

Summer passes and autumn comes,
hear you what I say.
On the highest mountain tops,
fall the caps of snow.
