Text & Translation

Vor der Tür
German source: Anon.

Tritt auf den Riegel von der Tür,
Wie gern käm’ ich herein
Um dich zu küssen.
‘Ich lass’ dich nicht herein,
Schleich immer heim ganz sacht
Auf deinen Füßen.’

Wohl kann ich schleichen sacht
Wie Mondenschein,
Steh nur auf, laß mich ein;
Das will ich von dir haben,
O Mägdlein, deinen Knaben
Laß ein!

Outside the door
English translation © Richard Stokes

Draw back the bolt from the door,
How I would love to come in
To kiss you.
‘I’ll not let you in,
Creep back home as soft as you can
On your feet.’

I can of course creep as softly
As moonlight,
Only get up and let me in;
That’s what I want from you,
O maiden, let your
Lad in!
