Songs of Spain & Latin America

Tue 14 October

Spend the day roving between Spain and Latin America. An array of events celebrates an immensely rich variety of song traditions. After a morning introduction to the sung Spanish language, BBC New Generation Artist Santiago Sanchéz performs songs from his native Uruguay as well as from Argentina and Spain. An afternoon introduction to some of the key poets of this repertoire is followed by a recital of Catalan song. In the evening, Nicholas Mulroy, Elizabeth Kenny and Toby Carr move seamlessly between 17th-century Europe and modern-day Latin America, before the day concludes with a concert of Tango music given by bandoneon virtuoso Victor Villena.
