09. The Shepherd on the Rock: Ailish Tynan & Iain Burnside

Tara Erraught and Dearbhla Collins have had to withdraw from this concert due to travel complications around the pandemic. We look forward to welcoming them to the Festival in October, and in the meantime are very grateful to Ailish Tynan, Iain Burnside and Julian Bliss for stepping into this recital.

Ailish Tynan and Iain Burnside need little introduction as two of today's leading song artists. Tonight's concert begins with a short group of Schubert 'spring' songs, performed by the outstanding young baritone James Atkinson, who so impressed at the last Festival with his contributions to Natasha Loges's study event on Brahms songs. Ailish and Iain remain with Schubert for the rest of this half, including such popular songs as 'Die Forelle' and 'Wandrers Nachtlied'.

Their second half begins with a wonderful group of English and Irish songs, including Thomas Dunhill's beautiful 'The Cloths of Heaven' and Stanford's dramatic setting of Keats's 'La Belle Dame sans Merci'. To bring Oxford Lieder's Winter into Spring weekend to a close, they are joined by the internationally-acclaimed clarinettist Julian Bliss and return to Schubert for his evergreen 'The Shepherd on the Rock': 'Spring will come, spring my delight; now I shall prepare to go a-wandering'.
