17. Alchemy, Magic and the Legend of Faust

14 October 2019, 3:00pm - 4:30pm

Alexandra Lloyd and Emma Smith discuss the history of Faust – the man himself, and the role of alchemy and magic in the legends that grew around him from the sixteenth century onwards. Moving from German origins to Christopher Marlowe, into the German Romantic writers and the wider revival of interest in the twentieth century, this fascinating discussion is interspersed with Faust settings in song, performed by Fabian Langguth and Camille Lemonnier, who impressed at the recent finals of our Young Artist Platform auditions.
