Äneas Humm
Baritone
Äneas Humm, born in 1995, comes from a Swiss Hungarian family of artists. He became a member of the Zurich Boys’ Choir at the age of six. He received his vocal training at the University of the Arts in Bremen and at the Juilliard School in New York. For his achievements so far, he was awarded the OPUS Klassik in 2022 as Young Artist of the Year and had previously received the sponsorship prize of Deutschlandfunk. In July 2025, he is nominated multiple times for the German Record Critics' Award.
While still a student, Äneas made his debut at the Stadttheater Bremerhaven and accepted guest engagements at Theater Osnabrück. In 2019, the Nationaltheater Weimar engaged him as a member of the ensemble; in 2020 he moved for two years to the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe and remained a member of the Theater St. Gallen until summer 2023.
There, he could be heard as Ophémon in Joseph Bologne’s L’AMANT ANONYME, as Dr. Falke in DIE FLEDERMAUS (alongside Eisenstein sung by Rolando Villazón), as Papageno in Mozart’s DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE, as Roucher in Giordano’s ANDREA CHÉNIER, or as Pantalone in DIE LIEBE ZU DEN 3 ORANGEN. In autumn 2023 he was again invited to the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, where he impressed as Agrippa in John Adams’ ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA. He also made his debut the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam with Fauré’s REQUIEM. This was followed by house debuts at the Opera di Roma as Papageno and at Teatro La Fenice in Venice as Harlekin.
Äneas Humm is also very much in demand as a concert singer and is a welcome guest with renowned European orchestras including the Bremer Philharmoniker, Musikkollegium Winterthur, Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie, Nederlands Noordorkest, and the Deutsche Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz. In December 2023, he again performed Bach’s WEIHNACHTSORATORIUM in the choreography by John Neumeier at the Hamburgische Staatsoper.
Upcoming projects in the new season include his role debut as Owen Wingrave in Britten’s OWEN WINGRAVE at the Festival della Valle d’Itria in Martina Franca, a tour with the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, and Mozart’s MAGIC FLUTE as Papageno (e.g. at the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, Konzerthaus the Enescu Festival in Bucharest), as well as various and numerous concert engagements, Dortmund and including Mendelssohn in Maulbronn, Beethoven’s SYMPHONY NO. 9 in Zurich and Lucerne, Brahms’ REQUIEM in Bern and Zurich, or a Christmas concert with the Symphony Orchestra in Basel. He will also appear in several performances of the annual WINTERMÄRCHEN at Hamburg’s Elbphilharmonie, with narration by Katharina Thalbach.
In addition, Äneas Humm returns to the Opera di Roma as Harlekin in ARIADNE AUF NAXOS and to Gran Teatro La Fenice for his role debut as Heerrufer in Wagner’s LOHENGRIN. Äneas Humm is also strongly dedicated to Lied singing: recitals have taken him to the Weill Recital Hall and Alice Tully Hall in New York, the Enescu Festival in Bucharest, Heidelberger Frühling, Musikfest Bremen, the Beethoven-Haus in Bonn, and the major Swiss festivals in Davos and Lucerne.
He also performed Beethoven songs at Schloss Bellevue in Berlin on the invitation of Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier to mark the opening of the Beethoven Year 2020.
His second solo album EMBRACE was named “CD of the Year 2021” by BR Klassik, and he also received the OPUS Klassik for Young Artist for it. He had previously enjoyed great success with his debut album AWAKENING. In 2024, his third solo album LIBERTAS was released to great critical acclaim. Further recordings are in preparation.
