Alfred Fardell

Pianist

Alfred Fardell is a pianist based in London specialising in song accompaniment and chamber music. He holds the Michael Gilsenan Award at the Royal Academy of Music where he studies Ensemble Piano under James Baillieu and Anna Tilbrook. Before joining the Academy, Alfred gained a first class degree in Music from St Peter’s College, Oxford, winning the Gibbs Prize for his results in finals.

Alfred’s musical training started as a chorister at Westminster Cathedral under Martin Baker, where he toured and recorded extensively with the choir, and was featured as a soloist on BBC Radio 3’s ‘Late Junction’.

Recent performance highlights have included performing at Wigmore Hall for the Royal Academy of Music’s Song Circle, a recital of Cheryl Frances-Hoad and Ivor Gurney at the Holywell Music Room, Finzi Eclogue and Britten Canticle 1 at St Peter’s College, Brahms Liebeslieder Waltzes in the Long Room at Lord’s, Beethoven An Die Ferne Geliebte and Ravel Histoires Naturelles at Queen’s College, Schumann Dichterliebe and Liederkreis op. 39 at New College, and the world premiere of Songs of Experience by Piers Connor Kennedy.

Competition success has included the Jean Shanks Award, Marjorie Thomas Art of Song Prize, the Rex Stephens Prize, the Dorothy Richardson English Song Prize, and a special prize in the 2024 Mendl-Schrama competition. Alfred was the first person to be awarded the Davison Young Musicians’ Foundation Recital Prize. He also represented the University of Oxford in the final of the Lewis Memorial Competition.

Alongside his work collaborating with singers and instrumentalists, Alfred performs frequently as a soloist. Recent solo recitals at the Holywell Music Room, Winchester Cathedral, The New Space (Oxford), and Syde Manor, have included performances of Bach Partita No. 2, Beethoven op. 109, Berg op. 1, and Schubert D. 958 and D.959.
