Emily Christina Loftus

Hailing from the North of England, soprano Emily Christina Loftus is a Welsh National Opera Associate Artist 23/24 and alumna of the Royal College of Music and Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Emily is also a Samling Artist and Oxford Lieder Artist 22-24.

For the 2023 season Emily will debut as Gretel in Hänsel und Gretel for Opera Holland Park (Young Artist) and cover Daughter 2 in Akhnaten for English National Opera. As a recitalist, Emily will return to Oxford Lieder as part of the Spring Song Festival and will perform in the Opera in Song Series at Opera Holland Park. For Welsh National Opera 23/24, Emily will debut the following roles: Strawberry Seller Death in Venice, Sorella Cercatrice Sour Angelica, Lauretta (Cover) Gianni Schicchi and Young Lover (Cover) Il tabarro. Emily will also be part of WNO’s Play Opera Live, Opera Gala Concerts and give an Associate Artist recital concert.

During 2021/22, Emily performed the role of Pamina in WSO: The Magic Flute for Opera North and joined the chorus for Così Fan Tutte at English National Opera, Parsifal at Opera North and the Glyndebourne Festival Autumn Season/Tour. Recital engagements included an Emerging Artist recital at Oxford Lieder alongside Mary Bevan and a Guest Recital for Howdenshire Music. Competition successes include being a finalist in the Somerset Song Prize and semi-finalist in the prestigious Kathleen Ferrier Awards 2022, and a semi-finalist in the Royal Overseas League Vocal Competition and the Premiere Opera Foundation International Vocal Competition 2021.

Whilst at the Royal College of Music (2019-2021), Emily worked closely with Rosa Mannion and Caroline Dowdle, and was generously supported by the
Leverhulme Arts Scholarship, Derek Butler Scholarship, Helen Marjorie Tonks Scholarship, the Josephine Baker Trust and Sir James Caird Travel Scholarship.
Emily is also a First Class graduate of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland where she completed her undergraduate degree as a RCS Scholar, studying with Patricia
MacMahon. Recent roles include: Gretel Hänsel und Gretel (Opera Holland Park), Daughter 2 Akhnaten (English National Opera), Pamina The Magic Flute (Opera North, WSO), Papagena Die Zauberflöte (RCMIOS) and Evita/Girl in Jeans Scoring a Century (British Youth Opera).
