Felicity Tomkins
Soprano
Award-winning New Zealand-British soprano Felicity Tomkins is internationally based between the United Kingdom and Australasia. She was the winner of the 100th Melbourne Opera Herald Sun Aria (2024), the Sydney Eisteddfod Opera Scholarship (2024), and the Lockwood New Zealand Aria (2023).
Felicity is a graduate of the Artist Diploma Opera Programme at the prestigious University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music in America (CCM 2023), where she studied with tenor Stuart Skelton. She has been a resident New Zealand Opera Studio Artist (2020), and an AIMS Graz Opernstudio Artist (2023).
This season, Felicity will make her mainstage company debut with New Zealand Opera, performing Contessa Almaviva in Le nozze di Figaro. She has performed roles including; Annina La traviata (Auckland Philharmonia/New Zealand Opera in Concert), Cio-Cio-San Madama Butterfly (Auckland Opera Studio/Manukau Symphony Orchestra), Military Wife/Soprano 1 The Knock (Cincinnati Opera), Jeannette L’amant Anonyme (CCM Opera), Madame Lidoine Dialogues des Carmélites (CCM Opera), Giulietta Les contes d'Hoffmann (Waikato Conservatorium Opera), Nedda-cover Pagliacci (Festival Opera, NZ).
On the concert platform, she has performed Handel’s Messiah (Auckland Choral), Bacalov’s Misa Tango (Bach Musica), Mahler’s Symphony No. 4 (CCM), Rossini’s Petite Messe Solenelle (Cantando Choir), Archer’s Requiem (Cantando Choir), and Bach’s B Minor Mass (Hamilton Civic Choir). She has been involved in a wide variety of projects, such as the Whakatipu Music Festival (Michael Hill International Violin Competition), and Janet Jennings’ Voices of Women recording (Atoll Records/SOUNZ, 2020).
Felicity has performed across the world, her competition accolades including the 43rd International Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition Semi-Finalist (2025), 13th Nadia and Lili Boulanger International Voice-Piano Competition with pianist Sooyeon Baik (2025), Elizabeth Connell Prize Finalist, Wigmore Hall (2023), Joan Sutherland & Richard Bonynge Bel Canto Award, Third prize and Tait Memorial Trust Prize (2023), AIMS Graz Meistersinger Finalist and Audience Prize (2023), Saengerbund Awards Finalist and Audience Prize (2023), Zenith International Opera Competition Finalist (2023), Dame Malvina Major Foundation Lexus Song Quest Runner-Up (2022), Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition Kentucky District Winner (2022/2023).
Felicity completed her undergraduate conjoint degree Bachelor of Music/Bachelor of Science(Biochemistry) at the University of Waikato, followed by her Master of Music with First Class Honours, her studies supported by the Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarship Programme. She is an alumna of the New Zealand Opera School, and is a former member of the Shakespeare Globe Centre New Zealand Young Shakespeare Company (SGCNZ YSC) who performed at The Globe Theatre in London (2014). Felicity has been generously supported in her international training by organisations including the Dame Malvina Major Foundation, Circle100, Kia Ora Foundation Patricia Pratt and Kiwi Music Scholarship Programmes, and the International Opera Awards Foundation.
