Geraldine McGreevy

Soprano Geraldine McGreevy trained at the Royal Academy of Music and the National Opera Studio, continuing her studies with Richard Smart. She has sung major operatic roles for theatres across Europe and has appeared as a soloist for some of the best orchestras in the world.

Geraldine quickly established a close relationship with Welsh National Opera, where she sang the key Mozart roles of Donna Anna Don Giovanni, Vitellia Idomeneo and Contessa Almaviva Le Nozze di Figaro, as well as Rosalinde Die Fledermaus, Blumenmächen Parsifal and Miss Jessel Turn of the Screw. In recent years, she has sung several roles at the Komische Oper in Berlin, including Marschallin Der Rosenkavalier, Alcina, conducted by Paul McCreesh, Marie Wozzeck and infantin Der Zwerg. In the UK, Geraldine has also sung Gerhilde Die Walküre and Blumenmädchen Parsifal at the Royal Opera House and Contessa Almaviva for Glyndebourne on Tour, as well as Alcina, Poppea Agrippina, Cleopatra Giulio Cesare and Angelica Orlando for the Early Opera Company, conducted by Christian Curnyn.

Geraldine’s other major roles have included Juno La Calisto at the Bayerische Staatsoper, conducted by Ivor Bolton, Ellen Orford Peter Grimes for Oper Frankfurt, Ghita Der Zwerg at La Monnaie, and Alice Ford Falstaff at the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence and the Theatre des Champs-Élysées. In concert, she has sung Freia Das Rheingold at the BBC Proms with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and Sir Simon Rattle, Chrysothemis Elektra with the Hong Kong Philharmonic and Edo De Waart, the title role in Theodora with the European Brandenburg Ensemble and Trevor Pinnock and Le Concert d’Astrée with Emmanuelle Haim, Alice Ford and Ghita with the Radio Filharmonisch Orkest Holland, Micaela Carmen with the CBSO. Irene Tamerlano with Capella Crakoviensis and the title role in Athalia with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and Kenneth Montgomery. Her operatic recordings include Berg’s Wozzeck Fragments and Lulu Suite with the Gothenberg Symphony, Rebecca in Sullivan's Ivanhoe with David Lloyd-Jones and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Handel’s Arminio with Alan Curtis (EMI) and Handel’s Riccardo Primo with Kammerorchester Basel and Goodwin (DHM).

A very experienced oratorio and orchestral song singer, Geraldine’s highlights have included Berg (Wozzeck Fragments, Lulu Suite and Seven Early Songs) with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra and the Malmö Symphony Orchestra, Vaughan-Williams’ Hodie and Sea Symphony with the MDR Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Howard Arman, Handel Dixit Dominus and Bach Magnificat with Kammerorchester Basel, Honegger Le Roi David and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with the RSNO and Stéphane Deneve, Telemann Brockes Passion with the Nederlandse Bachvereiniging, Mozart & Vivaldi arias with the Academy of Ancient Music, Beethoven Missa Solemnis with the Radio Filharmonisch Orkest Holland, Elgar Spirit of England for the Philharmonia and Britten’s War Requiem with the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra.

An experienced recitalist, Geraldine has recorded Wolf, Fauré, Schumann, Schubert and many English Songs for Hyperion, and regularly has broadcast recitals for the BBC as well as other European broadcasting institutions. She has returned to the Wigmore Hall frequently since her 1997 debut after winning the 1996 Kathleen Ferrier Award, most recently with two solo recitals of Fauré, Schumann, Schubert and Brahms. She made her De Singel recital debut in 2006 and has since returned there several times singing Fauré and Schubert with Graham Johnson, with whom she has appeared in recitals in venues across Europe and North America. She has worked with chamber musicians including Steven Isserlis, Michael Collins and the Nash Ensemble, and also with many early music groups including the viol quartet Phantasm, with whom she has made recital tours and recorded Byrd consort songs.
