Zheng Jiang

Countertenor

Praised by The Times for the “chorister’s purity” of his timbre, Chinese countertenor Zheng Jiang is rapidly establishing himself as a compelling artist on both the operatic and concert stage.

In the 2025/26 season, he is an Artist with The Mozartists, making his company debut as a soloist in their Mozart Birthday Concert at Cadogan Hall in January 2026. He has also been selected as a 2026 Samling Artist and a 2026 Leeds Song Young Artist. Later in the season, he will make his role debut as Sesto in The Grange Festival’s production of Handel’s Giulio Cesare. From September 2026, he will join the RCM International Opera Studio.

Recent highlights include his appearance at the Final of the 2025 Kathleen Ferrier Awards, where The Times praised his Schubert Nacht und Träume as “ineffably beautiful” and his performance of “Dawn, still darkness” from Jonathan Dove’s Flight as “compelling and devastating.”

His recent competition successes include First Prize for the Adrian Clarke Vocal Award in Grasmere Song Festival (2025) and Third Prize in RCM Lies Askonas Competition (2025). In 2024, he received the Nicholas Partridge Award for Outstanding Creativity at the Eastbourne International Singing Competition, and in 2025 he was a finalist in the prestigious Kathleen Ferrier Awards, Ashburnham English Song Awards, and the Patricia Routledge National English Song Competition.

Operatic roles to date include Cherubino (Le nozze di Figaro) and Sandman (Hansel and Gretel) with Summer Opera Lyric Theatre in Toronto. At the RCM, he covered Piero della Francesca in Jonathan Dove’s Seven Angels for the 2025 RCM Summer Opera Project. Other Opera Scenes include Ruggiero (Alcina), Rinaldo (Rinaldo), and Valentiniano (Ezio).

Zheng originally trained in Canada with Norma Burrowes, and completed his Master’s degree with distinction at the Royal College of Music, London, where he studied with Ben Johnson, supported by an RCM Study Award and the Josephine Baker Trust.
