Germán Enrique Alcántara

Baritone

Argentinean baritone Germán Enrique Alcántara has been making his name as a leading Verdi interpreter with recent major debuts including the title role in Rigoletto at Welsh National Opera, Renato in Un ballo in Maschera at Teatro Colón, Marquis de Posa in Don Carlos (French version) and Giorgio Germont in La traviata, both at Theater Kiel. He made his recording and role debut as Simon Boccanegra on Opera Rara’s world premiere studio recording release of the original 1857 version of the opera, which recently received nominations from both the International Opera Awards and Gramophone Classical Music Awards.

A former member of London’s Royal Ballet and Opera (RBO) Jette Parker Young Artist Programme (2018-2020), Germán Enrique Alcántara studied under Rosa Dominguez at the Maîtrise de Notre-Dame de Paris (2014-2016) and Ryland Davies at the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofia (2016-2018). Amongst his accolades include First Prize at the Joşé Carreras Grand Prix Second Edition International Vocal Competition of the Elena Obraztsova Foundation (2021); Gold Medal with High Distinction at the Manhattan International Competition in New York (2021); and Audience Prize, Teatro Prize, Amics de l’Òpera de Sabadell Special Prize and Third Prize at the 58th Concurs Internacional Tenor Viñas Competition in Barcelona (2021).

Following his role debut as Simon Boccanegra with The Hallé conducted by Sir Mark Elder, Alcántara has been invited by Elder to make his role debut as MIller in Verdi’s Luisa Miller at the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía in November 2025. Further highlights of Alcántara’s 2025/26 season include his Spanish debut at Teatro Real, Madrid as Kyoto in Mascagni’s Iris; Chilean debut as Marcello in Puccini’s La bohème at Teatro Municipal which he later reprises London’s Royal Ballet and Opera; role debut as Sir Riccardo Forth in Bellini’s I Puritani at Teatro Colón; and role debut as Alphonse in Donizetti’s La Favorite at the Klangvokal Festival Dortmund.

Alcántara also returns to Opera Rara to give a recital of rare Italian and Argentinean songs at London’s Temple Music Foundation. Several of the Argentinean songs will receive their UK premieres that evening and Alcántara’s exploration of music from his homeland will continue when he records his first recital album Cantares with his long-time collaborator, pianist Knut Jacques.
