Joe Davies
Speaker
Dr Joe Davies is Lecturer in Music at Lady Margaret Hall, University of Oxford and a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Music Department at Maynooth University. His research interests are in the aesthetics and cultural history of nineteenth-century music, with particular emphasis on Franz Schubert and women composers. Together with James Sobaskie, he is co-editor of Drama in the Music of Franz Schubert (Boydell & Brewer, 2019) – a volume of essays that provides a timely reassessment of the composer’s neglected stage works, and offers new perspectives for the interpretation of drama in his songs and instrumental music. The inspiration for the book arose at the conference ‘Schubert as Dramatist’ that he organised in 2014 under the auspices of the Oxford Lieder Festival. In June 2019, he served as chair of the organising committee for the international bicentenary conference ‘Clara Schumann (née Wieck) and her world’, which took place in association with the Oxford Research Centre in the Humanities (TORCH), Music & Letters, and the Royal Musical Association. He is currently editing a related volume of essays entitled Clara Schumann Studies for Cambridge University Press, and writing a monograph on Schubert and the Gothic.
