Johannes Kammler
Born in Augsburg, baritone Johannes Kammler is one of the most sought-after German singers of his generation, with an international career spanning opera, concert and song. Since the 2018/19 season, he has been a member of the ensemble of Staatsoper Stuttgart, where he has built a versatile repertoire ranging from Mozart and Rossini to Verdi, Puccini, Strauss and Wagner.
His principal roles include the title role in DON GIOVANNI, Count Almaviva in LE NOZZE DI FIGARO, Guglielmo in COSI FAN TUTTE, Papageno in DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE, Marcello in LA BOHÈME, Malatesta in DON PASQUALE and Marquis of Posa in DON CARLOS. Kammler is increasingly expanding his repertoire to include key roles from the German and Romantic repertoire. His most recent Wagner roles include Wolfram in TANNHÄUSER and Gunther in GÖTTERDÄMMERUNG.
The 2026/27 season at Staatsoper Stuttgart brings several important role debuts: Kammler makes his debut as Enrico in LUCIA DI LAMMERMOOR and as Germont in LA TRAVIATA, and returns as Marcello in LA BOHÈME. Internationally, he takes on the role of Robert Hesse in Johann Strauss’s KARNEVAL IN ROM with the Münchner Rundfunkorchester under Patrick Hahn. He also returns as Gunther in GÖTTERDÄMMERUNG under Kent Nagano at the Lucerne Festival and in Paris.
Kammler is equally active on the international concert stage in the 2026/27 season. In England, he gives two recitals in Oxford and at Wigmore Hall in London. Together with Philippe Herreweghe, Collegium Vocale Gent and the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra, he performs Dvořák’s REQUIEM. Further projects with Herreweghe include Schubert’s MISSA IN AS-DUR and Bach’s WEIHNACHTSORATORIUM.
Further highlights of the season include Kammler’s debut at Vienna’s Musikverein with Bach’s WEIHNACHTSORATORIUM, his return to Munich’s Isarphilharmonie with the same work, Beethoven’s NEUNTE SINFONIE with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, and a European tour with Teodor Currentzis featuring Bach’s MATTHÄUSPASSION.
Following his 2018 debut at the Salzburg Festival in Gottfried von Einem’s DER PROZESS, Kammler has steadily established a strong international operatic profile. Subsequent engagements have taken him to the Canadian Opera Company in Toronto, the Bregenz Festival, Glyndebourne Festival and the Baden-Baden Easter Festival.
On the concert platform, Johannes Kammler has worked with conductors including Kirill Petrenko, Gustavo Dudamel, Sir Simon Rattle, Kent Nagano, Teodor Currentzis and Philippe Herreweghe. His musical partners have included the Berliner Philharmoniker, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra and Collegium Vocale Gent. His concert repertoire ranges from Bach, Handel and Mendelssohn to Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert and Dvořák, while German Lied also occupies an important place in his artistic work.
Johannes Kammler received his early musical training with the Augsburg Cathedral Boys’ Choir. He studied voice in Freiburg, Toronto and at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. From 2015 to 2017, he was a member of the Opera Studio of the Bavarian State Opera, before joining its ensemble in the 2017/18 season. Kammler is a prizewinner of international singing competitions including NEUE STIMMEN and OPERALIA.
