Karla Grant

Soprano

Karla Grant is a Scottish soprano currently based in London, continuing her vocal development with Susan Waters. Karla is an MMus graduate of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, under the tutelage of Wilma MacDougall.

Karla’s recent engagements include performing in Grange Park Opera Festival’s 2023 Season as a chorus member in Puccini’s Tosca as well as the role of ‘Seconda Sorella Cercatrice’ in Puccini’s Suor Angelica.

Opera roles include Pamina in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte (Lyric Opera Studio Weimar) and the role of Sandman in Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel (Alexander Gibson Opera School). Opera scene roles include Gretel - Hänsel und Gretel, Humperdinck (National Opera Studio short course), and Vixen - The Cunning Little Vixen, Janáček, Giulietta - I Capuleti e i Montecchi, Bellini, Susanna - Le Nozze di Figaro, Mozart, and Calisto - La Calisto, Cavalli (Royal Conservatoire of Scotland).

Concert repertoire holds a special place for Karla. Oratorios include Haydn’s Nelson Mass and Creation, Mozart’s Vesperae solennes de confessore, Vivaldi’s Gloria, Faure’s Requiem, Bach’s St John’s Passion, Beethoven Mass in C Major, and Gounod St Cecilia Mass.

Karla is a passionate recitalist and works regularly with pianist Jia Ning Ng where both areOxford Song Young Artists 2022-24 and were Leeds Lieder Young Artists 2022. Together, they were recently awarded Second Prize in the International Music Competition ‘Triomphe de l’Art’ for Lied duo in Brussels. Other prizes include First Prize in the Governor’s Recital Prize for Singing, and Highly Commended in the Elgar Spedding Memorial Prize for Lied duo at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland 2022.

In addition to her concert activities, in 2018 Karla co-founded vocal ensemble Vox Duo, who are proud to work with Live Music Now Scotland. They have performed across the UK in their own Vox Duo concert series, and by invitation to The Wellington Arts Festival, The Linlithgow Arts Guild in St Michael’s Parish Church, the Edinburgh International Festival Marchmont concert series and others. In December 2021 Vox Duo began an exciting new venture collaborating with the Earthtones Trio and iOcco Music and released a recording of a new composition by composer Euan Stevenson, which has been broadcast on BBC Radio 4 Woman’s Hour.

Karla has had the wonderful opportunity to perform in masterclasses with renowned artists Dame Janet Baker, Julius Drake, Simon Lepper, Mark Padmore, Chris Glynn, Susan Manhoff, Dorothea Röschmann, Graham Johnson OBE and Malcolm Martineau.
