SongSpiel

Ensemble

SongSpiel is a group of young singers and pianists energizing the song repertoire, specifically, accompanied song for multiple voices. The ensemble is committed to exploring and advancing this repertoire through the presentation of established works alongside the commissioning and performance of new music. The group was first conceived at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama whilst working alongside the Prince Consort for a performance of Brahms Liebeslieder Waltzes and Stephen Hough’s Other Love Songs at the Wigmore Hall. Further performances include Schumann Spanisches Liederspiel and William Marsey’s newly commissioned Austerity Songs at St James’ Piccadilly, a recital at the brand new Sarah Abraham Recital Hall, Brighton College and a collaboration with Ensemble Perpetuo, shadowographer Drew Colby and the composer Cheryl Frances-Hoad on her cycle Thought Machine.
The group also hopes to explore the process of creating more dramatically engaging performances of the song repertoire through exploring rehearsal methods more commonly associated with opera and theatre.
