Song at Wolfson / Helen Charlston: Haydn, Brahms and Clara Schumann

07 May 2020, 6:00pm 15 May 2024 - 7:03am

The outstanding young mezzo Helen Charlston will perform Haydn's 'cantata' Arianna a Naxos, which explores the dramatic abandonment of the Cretan Princess Ariadne by Theseus, and was an immediate hit when it was written in 1789. Helen, a City Music Foundation Artist and Rising Star of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, also sings a selection of Brahms songs, including favourites 'Von ewiger Liebe' and 'Die Mainacht'. Her programme concludes with the six songs Op.13 of Clara Schumann: following the centenary celebrations of Clara Schumann in 2019, her place as a leading song composer is now firmly established and these are amongst her finest and most poignant songs.

After the concerts at Wolfson, book a table at the nearby Cherwell Boathouse and show your ticket to enjoy a complimentary glass of Gusborne Estate sparkling wine with your dinner. Booking essential: see website for details - cherwellboathouse.co.uk.
