Brindley Sherratt is one of today’s most respected singers, revered for his extraordinary vocal and stage presence on many of the world’s leading opera house stages. In recent years, he has also established a reputation as a powerful song singer, and his remarkable vocal timbre is perfectly suited to Schubert’s final songs, Schwanengesang. These settings of the poets Rellstab, Heine and Seidl were not in fact intended by Schubert as a unified set. They were put together posthumously as a cycle by the publisher Tobias Haslinger, but there is no doubt that they stem from a unique moment in Schubert’s final months and sit well together if only through the force of their groundbreaking, heart-wrenching musical quality.
