Karl August Engelhardt

Karl August Engelhardt

1768 - 1834

Karl August Engelhardt (pseudonym Richard Roos) was born in Dresden in 1768. He was a poet and narrative writer.

After studying theology at Wittenberg he earned his living as a private tutor, but in 1794 decided to devote all his time to writing. His literary sympathies lay with Romantic writers such as Friedrich Kind and Karl Gottlieb Theodor Winkler.

His poem Ihr Grab apeared in 1822 and Schubert's setting, D736, may date from the same year.

Taken from Schubert and his World, A biographical dictionary, by H P Clive.
