The Wanderer
17 April 2027, 7:30pm - 9:00pm
“All I ask, the heaven above and the road below me…” The figure of the wanderer – the solitary traveller - strides through Romantic song, from Schubert’s nocturnal dreamers to the wayfaring philosophers of Ralph Vaughan Williams. Baritone Ashley Riches takes the road today, returning to Oxford Song in the company of his regular collaborator (and recording partner), Emma Abate – a pianist “empathetically attuned” (Birmingham Post) to Riches' singing, now making her debut at Oxford Song. Their journey embraces 19th century Austria and Edwardian England, as well as the exotic voyages of Ravel, Fauré and Duparc: songs to ravish the senses as well as the soul.
