Songs of travel
21 October 2026, 7:45pm - 9:15pm
Presented in association with BBC Radio 3's New Generation Artists Scheme, and recorded for future broadcast
Konstantin Krimmel was a BBC New Generation Artist 2021-23. He is already firmly established as one of the leading baritones of his generation, and last year he and Ammiel Bushakevitz received a breathless standing ovation in the Holywell Music Room for their extraordinary rendition of ballads by Schubert and Loewe.
They return for this Festival to perform one of the great works of the English song repertoire: Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Songs of Travel. These settings of Robert Louis Stevenson have their roots in Romanticism and the songs of Schubert, but were also a pivotal moment in the development of English song in the very early years of the 20th century. They complete their programme with songs by Schumann and Brahms, and the Romanian composer Eusebius Mandyczewski who was mainly known as the editor of the first complete edition of Schubert songs but is increasingly acknowledged as an excellent song composer.
