Song at Wolfson: Neil Balfour & Sholto Kynoch

12 January 2023, 6:00pm - 7:00pm

Indian-Scottish baritone Neil Balfour appeared alongside Kitty Whately at the 2021 Lieder Festival in a stunning performance of Sondheim songs. We're delighted to welcome him back for this solo programme that includes Schumann's great song cycle setting the poetry of Eichendorff, his Liederkreis Op.39. Before that, Neil and pianist Sholto Kynoch perform selections from Schumann's Frauenliebe und -leben, interspersed with songs from Cheryl Frances-Hoad's One Life Standa glittering work written as a companion piece to the Schumann cycle.

Neil Balfour is a graduate of Leeds College of Music, the Royal Northern College of Music and the National Opera Studio. He started life as a pianist, conductor and punk-rocker before having a Damascus moment and falling in love with classical singing. A former Britten-Pears, Samling, Momentum and Concordia artist, he is the first opera singer to be booked by the Glastonbury Festival in the Astrolabe Tent and the first to beatbox in an opera at Longborough Festival Opera.
