02. Simon Bode & Simon Lepper: Die schöne Müllerin

08 October 2021, 1:00pm - 2:10pm

We are delighted to welcome one of the most exciting singers to emerge in recent years, German tenor Simon Bode, for our first full recital of 2021. He and Simon Lepper perform Schubert's great song cycle Die schöne Müllerin.

1820s Vienna might have been a metropolis of the time but it was a small city by today’s standards and Franz Schubert could walk easily into the hills with their woods and babbling brooks. Nature is everywhere in Schubert’s songs, and in his masterful song cycle Die schöne Müllerin, water and the colour green are as much lead characters as the love-struck young man, the huntsman and the beautiful miller’s daughter.

Here's what the Bayerischer Staatzeitung wrote of one of Simon Bode's recent performances of this work:

"Seldom one hears this cycle so direct, so gripping,…seldom so close to the meaning, so well articulated as from this tenor from Hamburg…Bode transports the struggle of this ultimately forsaken lover, with a clear, strong, bright-cored voice, with an array of colors, gleaming high notes, sweet lyricism and a finessed piano, emphatic but never forcing…“
