Schubert and Brahms: Birgid Steinberger & Julius Drake

18 October 2016, 7:30pm 17 May 2024 - 11:45am

We are thrilled that soprano Birgid Steinberger will return to the Festival with pianist Julius Drake. Their programme includes settings of Goethe in songs by Schubert, who Schumann revered. In the second half, they explore the songs of Schumann's great friend Johannes Brahms, whose songs are sometime unjustly neglected but are heard here in the hands of one of the great lieder singers and most renowned pianists.

Please note a change to the previously advertised programme: there will be no songs by Hugo Wolf in tonight's programme.

Festal supper will be available from 6:30pm every evening (except Thursday 20th). Enjoy a delicious hot main meal and side dish between the afternoon and evening recitals for just £11. Our food partners this year are the Vaults & Garden CaféThe Oxford University Club, and St Stephen’s House. Please book by midnight the day before by clicking here.

See your name (or that of a dedicatee) alongside the Schumann song of your choice and help ensure the future of Oxford Lieder by sponsoring a song from £25. Thank you.
