Songs of Youth & Experience: Anna Stéphany & Sholto Kynoch

14 October 2017, 7:30pm - 9:20pm

Following a sensational 2015 recital and recent acclaim in the Royal Opera's Der Rosenkavalier and Glyndebourne's La Clemenza di Tito, Anna Stéphany makes a welcome return to the Festival, joined by Oxford Lieder's artistic director Sholto Kynoch. The first half of their programme includes songs by the young Mahler, written in the 1880s and inspired by nature and folk music, and Grieg's wonderful six settings of German poetry, Opus 48, written in exactly the same period. After the interval, they perform a selection of songs by the senior statesman of song in Vienna, Johannes Brahms, including some of his arrangements of folk songs, by turns amusing and profoundly moving.

Some of the reviews from Anna Stéphany's recent performance as Sesto in Glyndebourne's production of Mozart's La Clemenza di Tito:

'Simply stunning' Opera Today

'A revelation' The Arts Desk

'the evening’s undoubted star was Anna Stéphany... terrific élan and immaculate technical control.' The Telegraph

'Stéphany’s ravishingly-sung and vividly-characterised Sesto deservedly stole the show.' The Independent

'Simply breathtaking' The Guardian
